Brown-bull energy smoothie
Here’s a healthy, chocolaty boost of energy in a glass (plus a serving of greens!) created by Andrew Muto & Pedja Milosavljevic of Nature’s Emporium. Makes one serving.
1 banana
1 handful of local sprouts or baby greens
1 cup of mixed local berries
2 dates (pitted)
1 heaping tbsp (to taste) of cacao powder (not cocoa — see “What is cacao powder?”)
Place ingredients in blender and mix until smooth. Enjoy!
What is cacao powder?
Somewhere along the way, the terms cacao and cocoa were mixed up and used interchangeably, when technically, they are not the same thing.
- Cacao, pronounced “Ka-Kow,” refers to the chocolate tree (‘Theobroma cacao’), its pods and the beans inside.
- Cocoa, pronounced “Koh-Koh,” generally refers to two by-products of the cacao bean – cocoa powder and cocoa butter. Both are extracted from the bean when it is processed in the factory.
The difference between cacao powder and cocoa powder is a matter of the temperature the bean is heated up to in order to separate the cacao butter from the cake-like material that is ground into a powder. Cacao powder is not typically processed at higher than 120˚F (48˚C), which proponents contend preserves its antioxidant benefits!
