Start the year right with a visit to your homeopath!
After the holidays, many people decide to start the New Year off on the right foot and I tend to see a lot of new patients in January. People are often tired of suffering with a particular illness, resolve for better health or are excited to try something new that they heard about from a friend or relative.
A very common question that I get is "what is the difference between a homeopath and a naturopath?"
A naturopath is trained in all areas of alternative medicine; they study acupuncture and Chinese medicine, nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine (such as manipulation, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy) and counselling.
As a homeopath, I specialize in one particular area of natural medicine. Homeopathy is the use of substances found in nature; plants, animals and minerals that have been diluted for use. Homeopaths use these substances to stimulate your body's own healing powers. When your body is out of balance we will start to experience symptoms that make us uncomfortable on the physical, mental and/or emotional level. These symptoms are what drive us to seek help.
Your homeopath will decide which homeopathic remedy you need by looking at all of your symptoms in great detail and also finding out as much as he/she can about who you are as a person, both emotionally and physically.
There are more than 4,000 remedies available to us in homeopathy and while there are hundreds that may help you, the more specific you are in describing your symptoms, the more specific your homeopath can be at prescribing the right remedy for your ailment. So, before you meet with your homeopath you may want to spend some time thinking about all of the symptoms that are of concern to you and remember, no symptom is too small. Your homeopath will likely ask you when the symptom started and what was going on in your life at the time. Also noting what kinds of things make you feel better or feel worse is helpful.
Dreams, sleep habits, food cravings, fears, past illnesses, your work and home life as well as your relationships will all be explored during this first visit. The more you can tell your homeopath, the better. There is so much for the homeopath to understand about you and the more open you are, the more personalized your treatment can be.
