A Guide to Natural and Eco-Friendly Fabrics
We are an emerging eco friendly clothing company in New Zealand creating innovative funky streetwear designs under the label Earthage, or Earthage Clothing. It is so hard to get hold of eco fabrics in New Zealand, we have such a small amount of sustainable fabric, so I love seeing blogs like this that promote all the lush fabrics available which are ethical, and very well made also, bring them on, get people informed, show us all how to break boundaries. Its great to be informed, thanks guys, keep up the good work!Tabitha5 hours 55 min ago

Car Sharing 101
I agree with the "Anonymous" comment above that the future of transportation will be a mix (and perhaps must be a mix) of car sharing, public transportation and private car ownership. I think a key would be to increase the ease of the first two options for uses, and improve the efficiency of privately owned cars. I'm an Environmental Studies student working on developing an EcoCAR for an international competition... our car is nearly built and will have zero carbon emissions. If you want to check it out, we have a website: www.uwaft.com and the competition blog is www.greengarageblog.org.Eric8 hours 44 min ago

The Truth About Bioplastics
What? You mean I can't put compostible plasics into my backyard composter?! Only into a comercial organic diversion program? Are you sure? This is very unclear. I've been putting them into my backyard composter all winter. I guess I see what happens over the summer....Scott16 hours 54 min ago

I will definitely look out for those brands. I also like Message Factory, a Quebec company which uses organic cotton to make its clothes.Sophie17 hours 53 min ago

Spring into a greener home
I hold a clothing swap once a year with all my gal pals. We have light appetizers and beverages and have some fun with games such as door crasher prizes and the best...the clothing mascot; the person chosen has to parade with every piece they picked out. The rest of the clothing goes to homeless shelter where the women there can make good use of clothes who are in need. I usually suggest to ones who have higher end pricey items to try consignment shops first, even an online one like, shopmyclothes.com can help bring in a few dollars. It's now become such an event that my gals circle of friends are calling me and asking to be on a list for next years. If you hold once a year on a regular date (winter is best as it tends to be long and dreary), then it becomes a once a year tradition...not to mention you get clothes from others and you save money too.Anonymous17 hours 59 min ago

The New Superfoods
I've heard that cranberries are usually grown using a lot of pesticides. Look for organicly grown cranberries when they're in season and throw them in the freezer to use off season.Scott18 hours 2 min ago

The Truth About Bioplastics
Oxo-biodegradable plastics are designed to be recycled first and foremost. The additive to the plastic (a metal salt) provides insurance that, if the product (let's say a plastic bag) is accidentally or deliberately put into the environment as litter, it will degrade. The length of time this takes is determined partly by the 'delay' programmed into the additive and partly by the environmental conditions in which the product finds itself (primarily exposure to heat and light). The advantage of oxo-biodegradable products over compostable or hydro-biodegradable plastics is that they do not produce methane (23 times worse for global warming than CO2) during degradation. Oxo-biodegradable products provide the best alternative to traditional plastics and have many other advantages over alternatives such as paper products, reusable grocery bags etc. see biodeg.com for more details - Peter McGuigan (www.emeraldaisleimports.com)Peter McGuigan18 hours 5 min ago

Going green in your kitchen clean up
I live in the countryside outside of Ottawa and have very hard water with lots of sulphur, iron etc. in my water. The only dishwasher detergent I have found to work is Ecover. I will gladly pay the $8 it costs to buy it because it does work. Hope that helps.Sandra20 hours 59 min ago

Levi’s RECYCLED Blue Jeans
A quick follow up.... Wow, I quess we just haven't given the effort we need to give toward contacting people on the internet about helping us with this project. It breaks my heart to think about jeans going to the dump when so many children, and people in general, need them. It saddens me to think of them being tossed into our landfills. Yes, I am not too good to ask.....Please help. Thanks, Terry HUGroup@live.comibdhiker21 hours 28 min ago

Levi’s RECYCLED Blue Jeans
Wonderful site, thanks for the opportunity to post here. We have a small company here in Tennessee which recycles jeans. This year we have pledged 2000 pairs of jeans to the Children of Appalachia Project. We hope to increase that to 5000 pairs if we can get enough donations. These jeans are washed, repaired if necessary, seperated, sized, bagged and tagged. It is hard to believe how many children of Appalachia (upper East Tennessee) have so little to wear. These are children in grades K-12. It would break your heart to see how ragged some of these children look when they come for free clothing. We will then give them the opportunity to shop with "green-bucks" right off the racks we set up in the gymnasiums just as me and you enjoy the chance to do so every day in the stores when we shop. Many will "buy" jeans for their parents. Nobody will be turned away. The "green bucks" are presented to them free. I can give you the address if you would like to help us in our quest to assist these children. It is only a small part of what we are doing in our recycle program but it will make such a difference in the lives of so many. HUG, 157 Autumn Drive, Crossville, Tennessee 38571 Can any of you help? Any jean works. No matter what style. No matter how ragged. Sure, they would like to have the latest greatest style. But OLD BEATS COLD! Any and all jeans would be appreciated. I can be contacted at hugroup@live.com or you can contact me directly at (931-337-5051) The Home Uprade Group, or on my personal cell phone at (931-261-9248) if you could help us out with some jeans or would be interested in doing a collection drive for us in your area. You can call me 24/7/365 and I would be glad to talk to you any time. Thank you so much. Terry (ibdhiker)ibdhiker21 hours 39 min ago

Organic Milk vs. Non-Organic Milk
hi i came across this feed while looking for info. I live smack dap in the middle of dairy farming country, i have at least 5 large dairy farms in my area. Some are organic some are not. The farmers who run these farms DO have high standards, they treat their cattle well from what i see. these barns are cleaner than some peoples homes, and treated better than some people care for their children. I live in canada so our milk regulation laws might vary from the USA, but just because a package says "organic" does not mean that the animals are treated better, fed better. it just means no antibiotics or sprays were used. it doesn't mean that other medicines or horomones weren't given to the said animal (I actually phoned my landlord who is a dairy farmer to ask him what organic means in terms of a dairy farmer). organic means no additives at all!! it means natural, raw. now my momma fed us kids raw milk when we were growing up, today i can't stand the taste of watered down homo milk from the store (i still drink it). have you ever put a glass of raw milk beside a glass of store bought? try it and i think you will be surprised by the difference in color, milk, and textures. I think alot of the farmers in my area do a great job, caring for their animals. I currently have 2 bull calves, that i have been raising since they were 3 days old, they actuallly were fed pasturized milk for the first 3 days they were alive, you know why ? because the colustrum (spelled wrong lol) is the milk that comes out of the mother cow that is full of natural antibodies and protiens to help the calf through the first 3 days of life, and yes it is pasturized. it is no different than a woman feeding an infant breast milk versus formula milk. please excuse the spelling errors, thanks and have a good dayAnonymous1 day 22 hours ago

Geothermal on a buck a day (or maybe even less)
I am in a similar situation to some of the previous posters. We replaced an aging wood furnace with oil backup with a geothermal unit last september. Last week I received my first 'actual' hydro bill (we get these every three months). It was over $700. Our winter bills used to be around $180 per month. When I called hydro and read the meter to the guy he said we are already over $700 for the next month. I was told by the installer that the system would cost a bit more to run, but would be fairly energy effecient. I expected an increase but not like this. I would NEVER have purchased this system had I known the hydro bills would be so high.Anonymous2 days 13 hours ago
